DPF Cleaning in Manchester
A blocked diesel particulate filter is usually a symptom, not the fault. We clean the filter and then find out what blocked it, because a DPF that is cleaned and nothing else will block again.
When to bring it in
- The DPF or engine warning light is on
- The car has dropped into limp mode and will not rev
- White or grey smoke, or a smell of burning
- Mostly short journeys, so it never gets hot enough to regenerate
- Poor fuel economy and a car that feels flat
What you get
- Fault codes and live data read before anything is touched
- Forced regeneration where the filter is still within range
- Cleaning on the car where that will do it, off the car where it will not
- The cause chased down: a leaking injector, a failed sensor, a stuck EGR
- Told honestly when a filter is beyond cleaning and needs replacing

Common questions
DPF cleaning, answered
- What actually blocks a DPF?
- Soot that never gets burned off. The filter needs a long, hot run to regenerate, so a diesel used for short trips around town is the classic case. It can also be a fault upstream, like an injector or an EGR valve, putting more soot in than the filter can clear.
- Can you clean it without taking it off the car?
- Often, yes. If the blockage is not too far gone we can force a regeneration or clean it in place, which is quicker and cheaper. If it is packed solid it has to come off.
- Is it legal to just remove the DPF?
- No. Removing it is an MOT failure and makes the car illegal for road use, so it is not something we will do. We clean it or replace it.
- Why did it block again after someone else cleaned it?
- Because the filter was cleaned and the reason it blocked was not found. That is why we read the live data first and chase the cause rather than just clearing the symptom.
- How much does it cost?
- It depends on whether it cleans on the car or has to come off, so we will not guess at it. Diagnostic investigation is £35 and you get a fixed price to approve before any work starts.
